When you're trying to conquer the world with the iron boot of Wizard Supremacy, it's difficult to remember to watch for Mad Scientists. And really, who would have thought that little Ichabod Smidgen, the Death Eater secretary (who always resembled a myopic rabbit with hypertension) was secretly a Technotheurgist of the highest caliber and was planning a palace coup?

Smidgen and his mind-controlled (and not so mind-controlled) minions staged a revolt, destroying all but one of the Dark Lord's Horcruxes and converting that last into a flying machine doomed to a repeat orbit. Maddened by years of copy-editing, memo-sending and minute-taking, he sent those four Death Eaters considered to be most favoured by Lord Voldemort aloft, and forced them to read what he considered the worst writing he could find.
